A few weeks ago I alluded to a new project we were working on. Something that would enable us to make our dream lifestyle of traveling for six months of every year and having a home base in BC for the other six months possible.
Well here it is….drumroll please!
Our New House!
Now before you think to yourselves; “Hey, didn’t they just spend a year and a half trying to get out from under a house? Wasn’t the whole goal to be untied and free to roam?”
Let me assure you, we are not tying ourselves down again. We do really want to be free to roam. We were very anxious to be out of our last house but now that we have shifted our dream a wee bit and plan to travel for six months of every year, having a house for the other six months just makes sense to us.
And here are the REALLY AWESOME things about the house:
We did not go into debt to buy it.
It is on the same property as my parents. (As in my parents who totally rock)
Being that it is on the same property as my parents it will be an experience in communal living for us. Something that I have always wanted to do. And what better people to do it with than with those you love?
The house is from the 1940’s and needs a total gut. I’m talking stripped down to framing, new plumbing, new electrical, new almost everything sort of gut. But we are the right people to do it!
Mike has been busy in the demolition phase and I have been busy reading books about designing a small house. At 744 sq ft. it is bigger than our motorhome but quite a bit smaller than your average North American home.
She is nothing special to look at now, but by the end of next summer she will be beautiful. My vision for this house is an earthy retreat. Lots of wood details, funky fixtures, and re-purposed materials. We are planning to use as much second hand items as we can and I am really excited to be in a house that we can decorate to our personal tastes (all the other houses have been built and decorated with the purpose of resale.)
Anyways, we are excited. We have a LOT of work ahead of us. And we are looking forward to having a place to host all of the amazing families we meet on our travels when they find themselves in Canada!
