One of my goals with this website has been to share how much it is costing us to travel. It’s not that I want to share all of our financial information with you, it is that I want to help inspire others and give a realistic portrait of the financial aspect of long term family travel.
So many people have said I wish I could do it but I could never afford it! Hopefully I can dispel that fear, or equally possible I suppose I might solidify it….after all we all have different financial situations.
Anyways, we are doing this trip with funds from the sale of our house. Our plan is to travel for six months of every year and when we are at home for the other six we will work to replenish the bank account. This situation is unique to us and I know there are a million other ways to fund similar lifestyles.
At the end of each month I will tally up our expenses (I am an Excel junky) and do an overview for you all to see. That info will then be transferred to a static page at the top of the blog called Travel Costs so that it will be easy to have a quick overview.
With that in mind, here is the tally for our pre-trip expenses four our family of four:
Flights (Return) : $4029
Travel Medical Insurance: $679
Kids Backpacks and Packing Cubes: $100
Total Pre-Trip Expenses: $4868
Mike and I already owned our backpacks and we really aren’t buying any special clothes or anything for the trip. We have bought a few things like gravol and baby wipes but I decided not to include them because they are items we would use even if we weren’t traveling.
We are really hoping to keep our monthly budget to under $2000. I am cautiously optimistic that this will be doable for us. I think as long as we stick to the original plan of slow travel we should be OK.
If you are also a travelling family I would love to hear what you set for yourselves as a budget!
